Easy user serviceability is an essential design requirement at Zipp. J-bend spokes are widely available at just about any bike shop and are easy to work with. They also avoid the potential problem of straight pull spoke heads spinning in the hub. We also believe that riders and mechanics shouldn’t have to remove tires and rim tape to make spoke adjustments, so we use externally accessible spoke nipples.
